Cresset House

Cresset House is a self-sustaining community providing residential and work facilities for a total of 60 adults with intellectual disabilities. Our residents (whom we also call 'villagers') range in age from 18 to 60, come from diverse backgrounds and represent a number of different cultures. Villagers enjoy a congenial village lifestyle in this secure community which serves as a comfortable and safe 'home away from home'. Everyone in the community is involved in contributing productively to the sustainability and advancement of the whole.

Cresset House is situated in Glen Austin, Midrand (between the two major cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria), on an expansive property covering 11 hectares. The facility itself comprises six residential houses, a bakery, an organic vegetable garden, 10 vegetable tunnels, a woodwork centre, craft centres and contracts workshops, a stimulation centre, an administrative block and a community hall.

We are proud to celebrate a total of 50 years of service to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It is our belief that all existing abilities should be developed in such a way that individuals can develop to a level where they can experience satisfaction and self-worth, in spite of their limitations.

To facilitate the highest possible degree of fulfilment achievable on a financially sustainable basis for every resident with an intellectual disability, both on an individual basis and as members of the community.

Provide care based on the extended family concept in such a way that psychological, health, safety, material and spiritual needs are provided for in a loving and caring atmosphere.
